In our rapidly changing economy, managing work and family responsibilities is challenging for workers across the socioeconomic spectrum. Increasingly, both men and women want to raise families while also pursuing careers. But the demands of modern work and work organizations clash with parenting norms and expectations. Societal and economic shifts, like rising childcare and food costs, increasing work hours and wage inequalities, and changing technologies, are reshaping workers’ options when it comes to managing work and family life.
These dynamics, in turn, are affecting a range of critical outcomes such as:
- Organizations’ abilities to recruit and retain talented workers
- Worker, child, and partner well-being
- The supply of workers, including in critical areas like STEM
- Gender inequalities in the labor market and in families
The Work and Family Impact Lab conducts collaborative research with academic and non-academic partners that improves career outcomes and well-being for workers with families. Our projects fall under three areas of focus: 1) Workplaces, 2) Careers, and 3) Culture.
